The sums

The average full-time worker in Portugal earns €24,254 a year before tax and takes home €18,207 after income tax and social security contributions (OECD, 2025, a single worker without children). Divided by 2,080 working hours, an hour of work pays €8.75.

An iPhone 18 Pro: €1,499 ÷ €8.75 = 171 hours. The first four weeks of January, and the fifth until Tuesday noon.
A Tesla Model Y: €40,990 ÷ €8.75 = 4,685 hours. Two whole working years, and the next until early April.
A Big Mac: €5.65 ÷ €8.75 = 0.65 hours, or 39 minutes.
