The sums

The average full-time worker in Türkiye earns ₺833,120 a year before tax and takes home ₺589,148 after income tax and social security contributions (OECD, 2025, a single worker without children). Divided by 2,080 working hours, an hour of work pays ₺283.24.

An iPhone 18 Pro: ₺137,999 ÷ ₺283.24 = 487 hours. January to late March.
A Tesla Model Y: ₺2,467,485 ÷ ₺283.24 = 8,712 hours. Four whole working years, and the next until early March.
A Big Mac: ₺325 ÷ ₺283.24 = 1.15 hours, or 69 minutes.

* Pay here is 2025's, and Turkish pay moves fast: take-home pay on the average wage rose 39% from 2024 to 2025 (OECD), and the net minimum wage rose another 27% in January 2026 (Ministry of Labour and Social Security). Against 2026 prices, the hours shown for Türkiye are probably well above what the same things take today. Had take-home pay risen 27% since, as the net minimum wage did, the iPhone 18 Pro would take 384 hours (still 28th of 28), the Tesla 6,859 hours (35th of 37) and a Big Mac 54 minutes (still 34th of 36).

The Tesla: Tesla's Turkish site lists ₺1,608,790 before taxes, and every paint costs ₺36,200 there; with the 25% special consumption tax (ÖTV) and 20% VAT (KDV) on top, the cheapest Model Y costs ₺2,467,485, before the ₺5,000 plates, registration and transport fee, which carries the two taxes too (₺2,474,985 in all). Tesla calls its Turkish prices estimates; deliveries of new orders start in February 2027. Hours count 52 weeks of 40, whatever people in Türkiye actually work. More in what the index leaves out.
